I am currently the Acting Treasurer and Newsletter Editor for The North Eastern Counties Dobermann Club and a member of the Scottish Dobermann Club.
My name is Sheila Graham and have a small show kennel, I live in a small village in Cumbria, from the road leaving my village, we are ideally situated to access the Lake District, the Solway Coast Line or Scotland all within half an hour.
I grew up with a passion for dogs and horses, I rode regularily during my younger days, but I was sadly never in the position to own my own horses, this is a love I have never lost and I still get in the saddle occasionally today, but I now need a foot up these days!!
I joined the Royal Air Force at 18yrs and traveled widely then family came along and fair bit more travelling ! unfortunatley my marrige was not made in heaven and we went our seperate way, this left me bringing up two boys and a girl - no mean feat as a single parent, and I have got to admit at times I was quite near to murder during those teenage years !!!! but that said they have now all grown up into amazing individuals of whom I am extremely proud, so it was from their names that my Affix came, Sharryle, Rhys and Stephen, by using the first three letters of their names "Sharhyste" was born.
I was first attracted to the Dobermann after seeing them on the programme "Magnum PI" as a youngster, they had all the elegance of a horse and just looked like poetry in motion as horses do when they move and when you hear them come galloping up tp you they even sound like a horse! To me the Dobermann is the thoroughbred of the canine world.
When I finally was in a position to own one of these fine creatures I took the chance, and Zac came into our lives, boy was he a learning curve! it was through Zac that I decided to enter a dog show, I never imagined where from that first show over in the North East at Spennymore things would lead.
It was not long before I had another Doebrmann ( its true what they "one is never enough") then another! and more dog shows were attended, then I progressed to having a litter ( I think breeding and showing dogs seems to be in my blood, my grandfather was sucessful in his time and I have a cousin who is "terrier man" and judges at Championship show level) - I totally adore having a litter of puppies to care for, I can honestly say I get great joy and pleasure from breeding puppies, and from showing which I do enjoy immensly also, but ulitmatley my dogs are family pets first and foremost.
Through showing dogs I have met some amazing like minded people, I have had some wonderful days and weekends away with my good friends Alison and Paul Richardson (Jasprico), we have shared some of the many highs and lows of showing, and on occasions the return journey from a show laughter has rocked the van up the motorway home.
Showing dogs is not a hobby for the faint hearted, it can be hard work expecially if the weather is adverse, but the it is a very rewarding hobby and highly addictive once you win that first rosette
With each litter I breed I try to improve my dogs, health, type and temperament are fundamentally important in the puppies I breed, and also the choice of sire, that is why I decided to join the Kennel Club Assurred Breeders Scheme to promote responsible breeding. When considering a new litter I choose the stud dog on the merits it can bring to the bitch I want to mate to improve what I already have, I do not go with using the "stud of the moment" or " using top dog syndrome" (a dog on a winning streak), I am always more than willing to talk Dobermanns and answer any questions on out ethics or just chat about them in general, my children now joke that they all take second place to the Dobes!!!! Sssshh I am saying nothing, but would like to acknowledge the support and help my daughter gives me in looking after out dogs, the time she has given has been invaluable - for which I am ever grateful
The picture left altough not taken by myself shows just show how synonymous Dobes are to horses ..........
